Workshop on Advanced Techniques of FTIR Spectroscopy

A workshop on advanced techniques of FTIR spectroscopy was held on June 23, 2014 in SBMU Pharmaceutical Sciences Research center in collaboration with Border Pharmaceutical Company. This workshop aimed to introduce the latest applications of the spectroscopic techniques and methods in basic and applied research, particularly in biological, medical and pharmaceutical sciences.

Given the importance of spectroscopy in our surrounding environment, especially in detection of substances and prescription drugs as well as biological systems, this training workshop was held in order to raise awareness and provide participants with appropriate knowledge and understanding of FTIR spectroscopy. Practical training was provided by Prof. Seyed Farshad Hosseini Shirazi, Director of the SBMU Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Center, Prof. Azadeh Ashtari Nejad from Pharmaceutical Sciences Research center and Mr. Tajrish, engineer of Border Pharmaceutical Company.

It is notable that the following topics were presented and discussed in this workshop:

  • FTIR principles and theories
  • FTIR Spectrometer
  • Working with FTIR
  • FTIR spectra calculations
  • Novel applications of FTIR in medicine
  • Practicing FTIR on cell samples
  • New horizons and defining applied research projects with FTIR

This training course consisted of lecture presentation, group discussions, working with FTIR, getting familiar with the inside structure of FTIR spectrometer and practicing FTIR on real cell and tissue samples.

This workshop was widely welcomed by participants, and Prof. Hosseini Shirazi gave a speech on organizing specialized training programs and workshops on spectroscopy in the field of biological systems, mechanism work, analysis, detection of toxic substances, medical diagnoses and detection of medication and prescription drugs in the near future, the news on which will be available on the site of Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Center : http://phsrc.sbmu.ac.ir.
